Pics of both boards completely stock, before I added or changed anything except for adding the thin strip of grip on the Penny.

Hi, I got my new bearings today, wow what a difference, the wheels actually turn now, i loosened up my trucks and carved a bit more, to keep momentum. Basically I wanted to cruise and not have to push so much. I found the stereo wheels harder than the penny's originally, but I'm going to have to get my mate out for a skate and see the difference again. Anyway, its not actually fun to ride and not a waste of money, plus it just fits in my back pack so i can cruise to from the train station to work!!! commuting is going to be fun now. I ordered 2 sets of bearings so I'm going to put them in my 5 year old jay adams z flex reissue. what bushing did you put in your boards hard or soft, what brand. I'm liking your new posts. Oh yeah I just came across brighton skateboards http://www.amazon.co.uk/Brighton-Skateboards-Retro-Plastic-Cruiser/dp/B006HULBV4 , basically the same as penny and stereo, but a UK company, their about £20 cheaper too. next pay cheque I'm tempted!
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome. Have lots of fun on it.
ReplyDeleteI have tried quite a few bushings. I like a lot of them. Hardness will depend on your weight and preference. With a new setup I like to put Khiro reds all around and ride it for a while, then maybe go harder or softer depending on how it feels. How much do you weigh?
Nice find on the Brighton Board. Did you see the posts I put up on the Fish Skateboards? Looks like the same thing with a different logo in the circle. If so they seem as solid as the Penny or Stereo. If you get one I would like to see some better pics than those on Amazon or the Brighton Skateboards website.
Hi, I ordered one of the Brighton boards, off of their ebay site, they had a deal for an extra set of wheels for free too!!! Are the fish boards the same? were they just the decks, no trucks or wheels? I got a little inspired to start my own blog too, so thanks to you! Hopefully the Brighton will turn up tomorrow, and I post up some pics. I like the look of the Orangatang Bushings, very cool.
ReplyDeleteAwesome, look forward to hearing about it. The fish boards were just decks. Blog looks good, those fisheye shots make that board look crazy. Yeah, I am really liking the feel of the Orangatangs in the Surf-Rodz.
ReplyDelete+ what wheels would you recommend? I use my board primarily for riding to school, not doing anything crazy.
ReplyDeleteYou can probably tell I'm kind of a noob at this, but I'm trying to get more into it, so anything you can tell me would help!
I think you will be happy. The bearings and the grip tape make a huge difference in my opinion. What kind of bearings did you get? Lately I am buying Bones Reds for everything.
ReplyDeleteIn the same size range as the stocks I like Bennett Alligators. They are a little bigger but I have gone through a couple sets and really like them. They are the same hardness as the stock also but do not have as much of a lip. I have tried a handful of others, Sector 9, No Schools, Cadillacs, Zig-Zags, Kryptonics...
ReplyDeleteI like the Alligators the best.
That said I have been liking wheels that feel a little harder, I think the next set I get will be the 85A Powell Rat Bones.
Ask any Questions you have, if I know the answer or have an opinion i'm happy to help.
I also bought the Bones Reds. I have the same ones on my first board and I saw that you recommended them so I'm pretty sure they will be great.
ReplyDeleteFor the wheels, thanks for the advice. The Alligators look perfect. (but what do you mean with 'but do not have as much of a lip'?)
I checked out out the Oerangatangs myself. The problem is that this is the first time that I'm going to buy 'lonboard' wheels so I have no idea what kind would be best for me. Soft or harder ones...
As I already said, I'm new to this so I'm kind of depending on your opinion. No pressure :p
I realise that wheels are something that I should make out for myself wich kind I like the most, so I'll probably buy the Alligators and then go from there to see if I want harder or softer ones
ReplyDeleteHere I am again :p
ReplyDeleteI have been looking around the internet for a couple of hours now. (I already now what you ment with the lip btw)and I'm almost certain to go for the Alligators.
The only thing I have a problem with is the durometer. I saw that you have the 78a but I read on the internet that when you weigh between 135-175lbs you should go for 80a to 83a. I weigh about 165lbs so I was thinking about going for the Bennet Alligator 62mm 81a. Would that be a good choice or would it be to hard for a beginner like me? (I have been riding my cruiser for almost 3 months now)
Yeah, for me the Reds are the best price vs performance right now. They should be real fun for you.
ReplyDeleteDon't stress too much on the hardness. You will do fine on either. The 78a will be a little smother ride and the 81a will be a little faster. I would be surprised if I could tell the difference unless I rode them one after the other. I personally would get the 81a next time I think.
About the Orangatangs, I recently tried out their bushings and like them a lot. I am curious about the wheels too now and will probably try them before too long but not on a Penny or a Stereo. As far as I can tell the smallest wheel they make is a 65mm. I think that would be pushing it for these boards. If you try it though let me know how they are.
Awesome, can't wait for them to arrive. Should be in a couple of days.
ReplyDeleteAbout the wheels, as the difference wouldn't be that noticeable I decided to go for the 81a. Simply because they're red and I think that it would go better with my blue board.
Thanks for the advice on the Orangatangs. I do have a question about the bushings. I saw that they weren't build for every kind of truck, but do they work on the Stereo trucks?
Those Bones Reds and new wheels together will make it feel like a whole new board.
ReplyDeleteYes, the Orangatang Nipples will just fit on the Stereo trucks.
I'm a beginner noob in comparison to you guys, but basically I've been interested in getting a cruiser for a while now and the plastic ones particularly appeal to me. As I live in England and don't want to pay extortionate amounts for shipping on boards like the Globe Bantam etc, my choices are between the Penny board or a Stereo Vinyl cruiser. I'll only be using it for cruising and fun, so I just want a nice, smooth ride. I was wondering which one you'd recommend for this? Which one would feel better and would be easier to ride etc, that's depending on whether there's much difference at all. I would also be interested, if you have time, if you could give me the pros and cons of both (if applicable) and upgrades that would be good like the best wheels for a nice cruise etc. I'm a short girl, if that makes any difference? I doubt it will as they're roughly the same size. Anyway, sorry this has been so long but I would greatly value and appreciate your advice :D P.s if Phil reads this, please enlighten me as to how the Brighton board is?
ReplyDeleteAlso, is there flex in both of them? I was just wondering whether as you stand on the Penny it bends down and feels a bit unstable? I assume the Vinyls are more sturdy or are they both the same plastic?
ReplyDeleteThis is all just my opinion, others may think differently. The decks are pretty much the same. On the wheels and trucks the Penny has a slight edge. On both the bearings and bushings should probably be replaced. On both I like to add grip tape.
ReplyDeleteSoooooo, if you are going to just buy and ride stock forever, get the Penny. If you are going to upgrade the parts get whichever one you like the deck more.
As for upgrades, I like Bones reds for these boards. Bushings are more personal, depends on weight and style. Griptape is all okay, get what you like the look of. For wheels, the stocks are 78a, so anything that hardness or a little higher will feel good. For size, low 60's or smaller work well. And if you get trucks at some point, I like midtracks, I love Indeesz, and I want to try Ace 00s.
If you want to get more specific on any parts questions just let me know, Ill help out all I can.
Similar plastic, similar overall flex, but I feel like the tail on the the Stereo is a little steeper and stiffer. Not enough to make a big difference though.
Thank you very much for your advice, it's nice to have an objective view on both the boards; this has given me a much clearer insight as to what to get :DD I was thinking of getting Abec 7s when I upgrade the bearings, would you say Bones Reds are better or is the difference only marginal? What bushings would you recommend for a smooth skate with nice turns etc? And if I were to upgrade the wheels, what brand would you suggest?
ReplyDeleteI have tried a ton of bearings, my Bones Swiss are the best in my opinion, but the bones reds are close and the price difference makes them the best deal in bearings right now in my opinion. As for ABEC numbers, they mean something, but not everything. If you find a good deal on some reputable abec 7s go for it. If not, try the Reds.
ReplyDeleteI like and regularly ride Khiro, Bones, Venom and lately Orangatang for bushings. If you want to, post your weight and I will suggest a starting point for the hardness you should try.
My favorite wheel for the Penny/Stereo sized board right now is 62mm Bennett Alligators.
Any other questions let me know, happy to help.
Well, in English measurements I'm about 9 stone so that should be 126 pounds? Okay, I might try Bones Reds then as you know what's best :) Would you say that I would even have to change the wheels when I first get it for a nice ride, or should I change them after a while?
ReplyDeleteYou are light, get really soft bushings for cruising and carving. I would look at Khiro Whites or Oranges in maybe a barrel and tall cone, or Venom 78 or 81A in the standard or super carve.
ReplyDeleteI know whats best for me from skating for a long time. That will give you a good starting point. As you learn and try more you will get to know what works best for you.
Try the stock wheels with the new bearings first. You may love them. If not , no loss you can upgrade anytime.
Okay, thanks a lot for your time and advice! :D You've been extremely helpful, I know what I'm going to get now - I appreciate it a lot! You are a wise being. It was nice to get some very insightful and informative information from you, after relentlessly searching on the internet to find someone who actually knew what they were going on about. Thanks again! :)))
ReplyDeleteAny time, let me know how it works out.
ReplyDeleteI decided to get the stereo and I really like it, I'm scared I'm missing out on the Penny though...did you ride them stock, if so, did they feel the same? I got Bones Reds and they work really well, I need to lubricate them though, I think. For wheels, it's between Bennett Alligators and Orangatangs, what do you feel is best (or any others that you feel would be better). The softer I go, I understand it'll take more to accelerate?
ReplyDeleteThey feel real similar, the biggest differences are little better finishing on the Penny trucks and the Stereo wheels feel a little softer to me.
ReplyDeleteFor lube I have Bones Speed Cream and Tri-flow right now. I like the Speed Cream better, either way the little bottle will last you forever.
Orangatangs smallest wheel is 65mm which is pushing it for this board in my opinion. I already get a little footbite on the wheels if Im not careful. The Alligator is a little smaller and currently my favorite wheel for a small board. You might like the Orangatangs though, dont let me turn you off if you want to try them.
The soft wheel will roll over rocks and cracks and rough streets smoother and quieter it will also grip more when carving. The harder wheel will be faster and slide easier. Ride the stocks for a little while and see if you like them, that will help pick which hardness you should get next. Also you will decide as you ride more and more which traits are more important to you.
Im glad your liking your board, have lots of fun and let me know how your progressing on it.
thinking about buying either a penny or a stereo with my next paycheck, this blogs the first real place thats helped me in making my decision. Got plent of stuff to swap on either one i get, but not much into that sort of thing unless its just swapping some wheels or bearings. My decision is pretty much coming down to which board is a more solid ride and which board you can do more tricks on. Ive seen some vids of some people doing some sick shit on a penny but nothing for the stereo, def need everybodys help on this before i blow that paycheck. also i dig the look of the penny a bit more but i can get a stereo near where i live, have to order a penny
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion both decks ride and feel very similar. If you can get a trick down on one, you will be able to get it down on the other.
ReplyDeleteGood that you dont mind switching parts, the wheels are okay, so an upgrade will help but not absolutely necessary. You will want to swap the bearings on either for the best ride though.
I like to put grip tape on them so that takes away the aesthetic factor you have, but that is still important. You are going to look at it every day, get the one you like. If you are going to put grip tape on it that matters less. The grip tape will definitely help with the tricks so consider that when thinking about the looks.
Its cool to support the local shop but its going to be your rider, make sure you are happy with it and dont settle just because it is close by.
And thanks for the comment about the blog helping, I like that people get something out of it. Any more specific questions let me know, glad to help any way I can.
ReplyDeleteright on, probably take the stereo so i can spend the extra cash on a new pair of swiss bearings for my longboard and throw the reds onto the stereo, plus some tape cus youre def right about the whole "looks like it was made by the chinese" thing. just felt like having a deck i could pop a few tricks on to impress the ladies, wasnt sure if the stereo had a similar tail on it. ill be sure to watch your blog too, bookmarked dude!
ReplyDeleteGo for it, with the bearings ad grip tape it is a fun capable little board. And more importantly good luck with the ladies, pick a color that they will think is extra cute.
ReplyDeleteKate - I've got a Brighton Skateboards board too. Really fun to ride and really nice for turns. Maybe feels a bit small on occasions but I guess that would be the case with the Globe & Penny too! There seems to be a promotion on them on eBay at the moment, or their website is:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.brightonskateboards.com
Cheers, Matt
Just bought the Brighton skateboards deal with the extra wheels, couldnt afford the Stereo, but guess these will be pretty similar for a casual skater, and also wanted to support the UK company from my favourite town! Cant wait to ride it down to the station every morning!
ReplyDeletewhich one should i get the Penny, Stereo vinyl, or globe pantam?
ReplyDeleteWhich one is cheaper?
I dont have a bantam so I can not speak to that part of the question. The Penny and Stereo are both really fun, the Penny having a little better parts nut the decks being equal. Looking around you can find deals on both, but I usually see the Stereo for around $20 cheaper. If cost is a big factor, go for the Stereo, youll get a pair of sunglasses for free with it as well.
ReplyDeleteI like Reds because they are cheap and pretty good, and mostly because I dont like to clean bearings so when they are spent, its no big loos to toss them and throw in some new ones. Get better ones if you are not adverse to cleaning them, but either way Reds are a good place to start.
ReplyDeleteI have never actually played with an old Penny. I have played with a bunch of other 60's and 70's boards. They are cool to have but will make much better wall hangers than actual riders. I would pick up the old Penny in a second, but just to have, and ride my newer boards. All the 70' boards I have seen have open cage bearings and that combined with age will make the ride suck. I think youll have more fun on current equipment, but if its your thing grab one and see what you can do to mod it to make it a fun ride.
What is the main difference between Penny's and Midtracks?
ReplyDeleteis it the truning radius?
Which ones are better for carving?
There are a bunch, but you might have to see them to get the whole picture. Midtracks are better made over all. For the turning I think they feel better. They also are drilled for standard mounting so you can use them on any board. Thicker stronger pivot and standard easy to find pivot cups.
ReplyDeleteEither one will carve nice and fun with the right bushings but I trust the midtracks and like their feel more.
I like the Surf Rodz Indeesz 100mm a little better but for the money the Midtracks are the best deal in my opinion. I like them better than the Pennys, Stereos, or Ace 00s. I am trying Ace 00 hangers with Indy baseplates right now and they are promising but for now the Midtracks are my favorite narrow, reasonably priced truck.
Since i don't have $44 for the midtracks right now(but i can save up), What makes the Penny's inferior? Would the midtracks fit on an old 70's board? I've seen some trucks like about 5 inches long that look like the surf rodz, would those be a good choice?
ReplyDeleteThere are a bunch, but you might have to see them to get the whole picture. Midtracks are better made over all. For the turning I think they feel better. They also are drilled for standard mounting so you can use them on any board. Thicker stronger pivot and standard easy to find pivot cups.
DeleteDepending on the board, Midtracks would probably be a good choice for a board of that era.
I would have to see the trucks, What brand were they? Also 5" hanger or 5" axle? That will make a big difference
I dont know the brand but they looked like this http://jinanemerson.en.made-in-china.com/product/QMXnjyrxvaYu/China-Skateboard-Truck-2.html . But the axle was 5 inches long.
Delete5" axel will be a nice size. I have never seen those, the step at the ends of the hanger looks kind of cool. Hard to judge the quality from the pic, they might be awesome or they might be junk. Without riding them I cant really say if they are a good choice or not.
DeleteWould the $45 Midtracks trucks be worth the hassle of going to a not so close (30 mi away)skate shop ? Over the easy to access $20 Penny's? The reason i want a Penny sized board is because with my current cruiser (35 inch long w/ skating trucks + 1/2 inch risers , and idk the size of my wheels)i cant turn as sharp as i would like without having to loosen my trucks to an uncomfortable level + a Penny sized board is pretty cool.
DeleteP.s were these trucks the ones you were talking about? if they are should i get them (im willing to pay $7 more dollars if they are)http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_SPM5964924608P?sid=IDx20101019x00001a&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=SPM5964924608
DeleteYeah, in my opinion the midtracks are worth the extra money over the stock penny trucksas long as you are willing to do a little drilling. Im not saying you need them, the penny will be plenty fun stock, but I like the build and ride of the midtracks better.
DeleteOn a penny set up either way you will be blown away by how tight you can turn after being used to any 35" board. Youll have a lot of fun.
Those trucks in the link are them. Im not going to tell you who to buy from but that price is steep. You can get them from an online skateshop for less than that even with the shipping added on.
they are both good. you can run both darts or both rt-s or like i have mine setup with a rt-s on the front and a dart on the back.
Deletethe rt-s is just a little more turny and the dart a little more stable. the rt-s also has a longer kingpin for taller bushings if you want.
If my setup was both rt-s would i get mad or minimal speed wobbles?
DeleteDoes your setup cause you to not turn as tightly as you would if you had both rt-s'?
You can make it more stable and avoid speed wobbles by running a little harder bushings. A lot of people deaden the back truck a little more than the front, either with the less turny dart baseplate or harder bushings in the back. You can still turn well on any setup once you get it dialed in for you.
Deletei recently used my friends board it had skating trucks and was a cruiser deck , but surprisingly it turned very well. It had Angled risers , have you skated on a board with angled risers? (if u have)Do the riseres make the board more manueverable?
DeleteYes, my Flexdex slalom v30 has some extremely angled risers on if from the Khiro wedge kit. They can make the board turn faster or slower. If the short part of the wedge faces out the truck will turn quicker. If the short part is towards the center of the deck it will be less turny.
DeleteSlalom and pumping setups use this to quicken the front truck and deaden the back truck. If you do both wedges facing out it will make the board turn quicker.
What degree or inch of risers should i get, for my 35" board with 1/2 inch risers? If i get angled risers do i take the other's off? Are they available in most skate shops?
DeleteAny specific brands?
Thats going to be personal preference. You can get wedged risers from anyone in either hard or soft, soft will just absorb a little more vibration. Or you can get a wedge kit from Khiro and have a bunch of different angles from 1 to 15 degrees you can try out and decide what you like but it will be more expensive. Either way, the higher the angle, the more it will change how the truck turns.
DeleteIt depends on your setup if you will to add them to your current risers or just use the wedges. I would guess you will just use the wedges. One thing you probably will need is hardware. Make sure you get some long enough.
I wouldn't worry too much about the brand on these. Its hard to mess up a riser.
Are angled risers and wedges two different types of risers? Are the wedgedes the Khiros? If i get angled wedges or riser will i get speed wobbles? I heard you need more pressure to turn with angled wedges, do you? I have standard kingpin trucks will that make a difference with the pressure to turn? What angle/ degree of risers do you recommend , so i wont have to use alot of pressure to turn?
DeleteDifferent words, they do the same thing. The Khiro wedge kit are the angled rails where each truck takes 2 pieces, regular angled risers are one piece and sometimes called wedges too.
DeleteIts hard to say about pressure and speed wobbles. That depends on your riding style and experience. Just try a set of the standard Khiro soft or hard angles risers and see if you like the feel. If so you can decide if you want to explore different angles more.
On my Penny I have Surfrodz Indeesz with Nipples, Bones Reds, grip tape and stock wheels. On my Stereo I have midtracks, Venoms, Bones Swiss, grip tape and Bennett Alligators.
DeleteNo speed wobbles, and pretty soft bushings on both. That said I don't have any really steep hills around where I live, but a few decent ones. You can carve out of speed wobbles if you feel them coming on once you get used to it.
If I am going out specifically to bomb hills somewhere I do not take the Penny or Stereo. They arent really suited to that.
I want to learn to do basic skate tricks e.g ollie, shove, pop shove etc.( i dont like the feel of skateboards) Is a penny board or a sturdier Penny shaped deck good for that?
DeleteDo you have a nickel(27")or used one before? Do you think the nickel is good enough to do basic skate tricks with?
Those are all tricks that you can learn and do on a Penny. I will say that that they will be easier to learn on a new school board in my opinion though.
DeleteI do have a Nickel. It is a real fun board and for me is easier than a Penny to do the tricks you mentioned on.
If i get a nickel what kind of trucks should i set it up with? regular skate trucks, Midtracks trucks, or use the stock? Have you modded your nickel? Do you use the kicktail to turn or do you lean?
DeleteI like the trucks that come on the Nickel. I think they are the best of the stock trucks that I have tried in a while. Give them a go first.
DeleteI currently have Bennetts on my Nickel, because they are a little taller and I was trying some bigger wheels. If using the stock wheels or similar size the stock trucks are pretty good though.
Can/do you skate( do basic tricks) with the nickel? Do you get speed wobbles going down minor slopes(not exactly hills, but elevated streets) I want to cruise( like maneuver around cars that are trying to merge into traffic, but are waitng in their driveway or parking lot ,like with angled trucks, not exactly like angled trucks but with ease )Because when i try to turn tightly on my 35 inch cruiser(i have skate trucks and 1/2 inch risers) both wheels on one side rise up. Anyway i want to be able to skate on the nickel, can you do that with the nickel stock?
DeleteYeah, you can learn a lot of tricks on a Nickel. It may be a little harder to learn than on a new school board, but you'll get them down.
DeleteSpeed wobbles will have more to do with your skill and experience than the deck. Longer wheelbase will make a board more stable but you can overcome that to a point with practice.
I don't know what kind of board your 35" deck is, but because the Nickel most likely has a considerably shorter wheelbase it will turn tighter than your deck. Also if the wheels rise up on your deck it sounds like you need softer bushings.
The Nickel is a very fun board, you will be just fine doing tricks and and some little hills.
My board is a pintail like sector nine except i have a kicktail, and 8 1/4 inch(axle to axle) long trucks, and 1/2 inch risers, and 64mm wheels (idk the a-scale measurement , but they're soft) same basic shape as this one just three inches shorter
Deletehttp://www.surfing-waves.com/Item/SD482014688/sector_nine_el_azteca_longboard_skateboard_blue.htm
What shape, durometer, and washer combo will help me turn tighter (i have stock barrel shaped bushings w/ cupped washers)?
You can start by loosening the kingpin nut a little if there is room and turning the roadside washer the other way so it is not restricting the top bushing as much.
DeleteIf you get new bushings you can get more lean by loosing material, a cone where there was a barrel or by getting softer bushings. I don't know what durometer to tell you because I don't know what you have now, but go a step or two down.
If i do get bushings do i get a barrel on the bottom and cone on the top combo?(my bushings are harder than my friends[stock] stereo bushings)
DeleteWould a penny sized board with tracker rts or dart or the combo of the two, be better than a stock stereo? ( considering the rts's/ dart are $20 each and the deck i want might be around $40 and the stereo was $75 including shiping)
That will be personal preference. I have used both cones, cone and barrel and both barrels. I like the barrel and cone, best. You really won't know which you like the feel of best until you try some combinations out.
DeleteYes. I bought a couple of the Fish Skateboards decks and they are very similar to the Stereo. Having the Trackers vs the Stock Stereo trucks is a big difference for the better.
So i will be able to maneuver better with the rts's/dart far better than the stereo? or spend $20 less and get the stereo?
DeleteIn my opinion, yes. The difference is worth way more than $20
DeleteDoes the rts/dart combo give you alot more stability than the rts/rts combo?
DeleteWhich combo of these(or the same trucks) would you suggest for a penny sized/shaped board?
Deletehttp://www.shopatron.com/products/productdetail/Tracker+MID+89mm+/+FUL106mm+Dart+new+school/old+school+6+hole+pattern/part_number=T-DART-293949/2744.0.1.1.1004773.7249.72679.0.0?pp=20&

would an rtx base plate make a difference in stability/turning?
http://www.shopatron.com/products/category/Slalom/2744.0.1.1.1004773.7249.57881.0.0
The dart will be a little more stable in the back, not a big difference.
DeleteI would go with the Midtrack size. It will be closer to the width of the stock trucks. You could do the 106mm, the wheels will just stick out further.
As for dart vs rts, I like the rts, at least in front because the kingpin is a little longer so you have a wider choice of bushings. The back doesn't matter as much because most like it a bit more stable. Rts front dart back is how I have my Stereo set up and would be what I recommend.
would the midtracks be an upgrade to my cruiser( 35 inch long , a 5 inches long where the bolts on the nose are, 6 inches long where the bolts on the back are)? If so what length? can they out perform 50 degree angled gullwings? With what hardware could they outperform gullwings(if possible)?
DeleteThey are probably not right for that board. Midtracks are too narrow. Some wider traditional trucks that are wedged can be really turny and give it a different feel, but you still might be better off with longboard trucks like you have. I haven't ridden the Gullwings so I can't really say anything good or bad about them.
DeleteHave you tried larger(219mm)Tracker trucks?
DeleteDo you think vintage trucks are any good, what if i switch the bushings?
DeleteWhat kind of vintage trucks?
DeleteI have not. The deck looks really cool, but I have to hold any other opinions until I play with one.
ReplyDeleteSo your opinion is that the Penny would be better choice? I am 45 kg weight man. That's about 127 lbs I think. Can you give me some advice about bushings? I want cruise. Not some tricks and so on. Only nice smooth cruising. I have Fireball Beast 75mm and bear grizzlie's 852's on my LB and in the town I over roll everything. Is this small 59mm wheels ove roll this "ingualities" too? And some about bearings. I have one from China. It's abec 1 i think. And it's great!! Better then some abec 7! Thanks for an advise.
ReplyDeletePS: Sorry for my English. I am from the Czech Republic and I am only 15 yrs old. But i go to English section on my high school and study hard! :D
The Penny and Stereo are close enough that you should get the one you like better. I personally think the components on the Penny are a little better made though.
ReplyDeleteAt that weight you can get away with soft bushings, Khiro Blue are probably a good starting point to see if you want to go harder or softer.
These will roll over most things, way more than new school wheels, but not as much as your 75mm wheels. Youll get used to the differences.
I use Bones Reds lately, but if you found a bearing you are happy with keep using them.
Good luck with that schooling, Keep skating.
If you get the reds, and I really suggest you do, and a sheet of grip tape as well, then get the one you like better. The pennys components are a little better, but they are close enough that either one will be fun. Even more so after that bearing swap.
ReplyDeleteAnd can I my wheels instead of the Penny´s wheels? Did you try put bigger wheels? I´m afraid of that when I put my 75mm wheels and I turn, they maybe touch the deck and I fall.. And sorry. My weight in yours is 99 lbs.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous: Please read all comments. You´ll get an answer for your guestion. Sparkle said that Penny is a little bit better. But in both skates are shit bearings!!! It´s good to buy new bearing (Bones red suggest sparkle I think) and if you´re lighter or weighty, you can buy some different bushings. But this is depends on your feeling of ride.
You are pretty light but those wheels are huge. You would have to try it out to see if you like it but that would be way to big for most. That would really limit how tight you could turn and will probably rub your shoes really easily.
ReplyDeleteso which is better in the long run stereo or penny?
ReplyDeletePretty even, small edge to the penny.
Deleteso stereo is better with the bones bearings than the stock penny
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, yes. The stereo shill has that goofy kingpin, but the bearings would put it over the top.
Deleteso i'm willing to upgrade bearings ETC so the stereos better with upgrades or the penny ive heard the pennys unbreakable
ReplyDeleteThey are pretty equal with upgrades to both. The decks are similarly made so they should be similarly durable. I have never seen either one broken so I wouldn't worry too much about that. I would get the one you like better then do your upgrades.
ReplyDeleteI'm around 200lbs, should I get the penny board or the stereo vinyl cruiser? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThe Penny does not list a weight limit. The Stereo lists 175lbs as the max weight. I feel like the Stereo and the Penny feel equally sturdy but I am about 170#. If you go by the manufacturer I guess the Penny?
ReplyDeleteI already have the black & green stereo cruiser unopened at home. I was so excited until I found out about the weight limit. I like the color and look of the stereo more than the penny. But I'm just worry that I'd snap it in half. Do you think I should exchange for penny or I should be fine with stereo. Thank you so much for your blog, I've learned a lot.
ReplyDeleteThats a tough one. Im not going to go against the manufactures advice so you shouldn't ride it. If it were me though I would ride it and just try to keep my feet over the trucks most of the time. Glad you like the blog, whether you keep it or go with the Penny keep me posted on what you think of them.
DeleteHello! I was here looking for help for some bearing tips! Now im reading all your post on your blog! You seem like an awesome dude! Cheers all the way from Denmark!
ReplyDeleteThanks man. You seem like a pretty awesome dude yourself. If you have any specific bearing questions let me know, ill help out if I can.
DeleteThey are both good. If you want a certain color go for the penny. If you enjoy a nice flex go for the penny. If you want a stiffer board go for the Stereo. If you want a chill deal go for the stereo. If you are a little big go for the PENNY NICKLE. But overall they are both good boards, whatever you pick, Board Hard!
ReplyDeleteim thinking of getting a board but im stuck... i dont know if i should get a pennny or stereo. i want one that will be good to cruise. i live in cali in the south bay area and im looking for something good to maybe cruise around the beach or around town which will you recomend?
ReplyDeleteSweet. Thanks man. Anw, any comments on globe bantam? I just ordered today.
ReplyDeleteI have been waiting on a local shop to get some in and just this weekend I saw the owner and he said they were. I probably won't get over there to the weekend so you should have yours before i get mine. Ill put up a post or two after I get some time riding it.
Deletehey im new to cruisers and was thinking about getting one. i've read tons of reviews and most of your blog and am pretty set on getting a sterio. As for upgrading it im gonna get bones reds and keep the trucks. i want to switch out the wheels and bushings but really dont have any idea which direction to go. i weigh about 135 and want something to just cruise around on. you seem like you know alot and id like your opinion on the best setup. thanks alot!
ReplyDeleteGive it a go with just the bearing change, after that I would add grip tape. When you change out the bushings go soft because of your weight, maybe Khiro orange or blues or a combo of the two, or Bones soft to start and see it you want to go harder or softer.
DeleteAs for wheels, I like the Bennett Aligators on mine after trying a bunch of different wheels.
hi, i cant decide on whether to get a stereo or brighton, i want a board that i can cruise with, put in my bag and do a few tricks on, the only thing im worried about is the angle of kicktail, does the height affect the ease of doing tricks, and which is better? Thanks, Jack.
ReplyDeleteI have not ridden a Brighton so I can't really comment on that. As far as similar styled boards, I have a Penny, Stereo and Fish. The Stereo seems to have the stiffest tail and that might make tricks a little easier at first. I wouldn't worry too much about it though, you'll get used to whichever deck you're riding all the time.
Deleteanybody have a globe bantam and Penny/ stereo? if so which one is better stock? Which one will be better if i get new bearings?
ReplyDeleteA local shop just restocked Bantams so I will have one here pretty soon. Ill compare it to the Penny and Stereo soon after I get some riding time in on it.
Deleteok thanks
DeleteHave some pictures and first impressions up now
Deletewhere?
Deletethe 2 newest posts. Im going to try to get a comparison to the Stereo and Penny up this weekend.
DeleteGreat, can you tell me which one (stereo or bantam) is better stock?, Thanks
DeleteSo far I think the Bantam. I have some comparison pics taken, I will post more detailed thought tonight or tomorrow.
Deletewhat size wheels would you suggest?
ReplyDeleteSomewhere around 60mm. I have the stock on my Penny and 62mm Alligators on my Stereo right now.
Deleteif you had to recommend either a penny or stereo which would it be? i can't decide between the 2
ReplyDeleteIf I can change parts out its a coin flip, maybe a little edge to the Stereo. If I had to keep it stock I would get the Penny.
Deleteyou mentioned khiro bushings and i was looking and there are a bunch of different styles like double barrel or tall cone. whats the difference between these and which ones would you recommend.
ReplyDeleteBarrels will be a little more stable, but less turny than cones. I use a lot of barrel boardside and tall or short insert roadside, depending on the trucks.
ReplyDeleteEarlier in the blog you mentioned that the stereo trucks's kingpin is goofy and some bushings won't fit. can this be fixed by replacing it with a normal one or not. also will a khiro pivot cup fit them or not
ReplyDeleteYes, you can replace the kingpin and make everything better, but you have to epoxy it in. There is a post on here where i took some pics when I did it. No on the pivots. I have tried all the sizes I have and none fit. They are an odd size.
ReplyDeleteThanks alot for the help. ill probably just end up getting some midtracks when i can. dont feel like going through the hassle of epoxying in and not being able to switch out the pivot bushings.
ReplyDeleteYour welcome, any time. Thats a good line of thinking. You will be better off in the long run with the Midtracks.
DeleteHi everyone!
ReplyDeleteJust got my penny and i have no experience skateboarding, only with rollerblading..
My purpose is just to cruise to the subway instead of walking, and no tricks etc (i'm already 30! Cant afford to fall and break my bones. :(
so my question is, do i need to loosen the trucks/wheels?
Any tips on riding it well?
Thanks!
Hello,
DeleteThats awesome, it should definitely be more fun than walking. Hopefully more fun than rollerblading too.
If the wheels spin free but do not slide back and forth on the axle very much then you don't have to mess with them. When putting on wheels I usually tighten the nut down the whole way and then back off about 1/4 turn. Then test for spin and slipping on the axle and loosen or tighten a tiny bit more depending on how it feels.
On the trucks, that is all about feel. You will have to ride it a while then tighten it a half a turn and see what you think. My girlfriend is learning to skate and she likes her trucks tighter than I do so while you are just starting you may find it easier with tighter trucks. That said, you don't want to tighten them too much and really squish the bushings. Instead if you feel like you need to go much tighter you will want to switch to harder bushings.
The best thing that you can do to get better quickly is to spend a bunch of time on it. Riding with others will help you progress more quickly too. Other than that, just have fun.
You are welcome, Any time.
Thank you so much sparkleisaid!
DeleteIts really great advice from you and another thing is that, do you feel that the penny wobbles when going over rough surfaces and i usually can't keep my balance? Is that the problem with the wheels/trucks or its coz i'm too novice at this??
Hope you could do a little tutorial on standing on your penny board!
There's only one or two videos tutorials on this topic on YouTube. I find it awkward to have to spread my feet apart so widely when skating. :(
You are welcome.
DeleteIf the board feels wobbly then tighten the trucks or switch to some stiffer bushings. As you get more experienced, you will have better control and be able to ride with looser trucks without it feeling that way.
Yeah, maybe one of these times Nicole and I are out we will shoot a little video and post it.
You don't have to keep your feet at the ends of the deck. If its more comfortable you can move them more towards the center unless you feel like the board is flexing too much if you do that.
Thank you so much once again!!!!
DeleteJust tried out riding again last night and it felt so much better and smoother.
Just that i'm still having problems with turning, didn't dare to lean my body off the side too much...
Will practise again once the sun sets, too embarrassing for a lady in her 30s practising this! haha!
Thank you!
Hey I saw this blog and wondered if you could help me. I have been longboarding for about a year and a half and I saw a video of the penny board on youtube. I really want to try it and was wondering what is better the Penny board or the Stereo board???
ReplyDeleteIf you are going to keep it stock, I feel like the Penny is set up better, If you are going to upgrade parts then it doesn't matter too much. They are both fun boards, if you have any specific questions, let me know.
DeleteWhich is better for doing tricks on it ? Stereo or Penny? Not sure whether to get Stereo or Penny as i want to cruise and do tricks
ReplyDeleteYou will be able to do tricks on either. The decks are very similar. If you are going to keep it mostly stock, my opinion is to look at a Penny. If you are going to upgrade a lot of things, either way will work out.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean by mostly stock? Sorry. Beginner here. Heh
DeleteNo reason to be sorry, it's awesome that you are learning. I mean that if you are going to leave all the parts on it that it comes with when you buy it I like the Penny better.
Deleteah. i get it . thanks! :D just wondering if a bantam or a penny is better.. if you have to choose, which one will you pick?
DeleteThats subjective, they are both fun but if I had to pick only one I like the Penny.
Deleteahh. thanks for the answers btw ! :)
DeleteAny time, let me know which one you decide on and how you like it.
Deletei have decided to get a stereo. hahah. probably ordering it from amazon after 29 July. Had a hard time convincing my mom to let me get one. hah
Deletedecided to order a stereo end of july. probably buying wheels too since the stereo doesn't have the color combination i want unlike the penny.
DeleteTHats awesome man, let me know how you like it.
DeleteHahah. I will ! :)
Deletemy board arrived. freaking happy when i received it. tried it out at home and it's difficult to turn. any idea how to make it turn easier ?
DeleteThats great, have fun on it. Start off by loosening the trucks. Turn the big bolt between the wheels. Start small, with like a half or quarter turn until it feels right. If you cant get it loose enough you can switch to softer bushings.
Deletethanks man. It's easier to turn now :)
DeleteWhat's the difference between the old penny and the new 2012 penny
ReplyDeleteFrom looking at the new ones in the shop down the street, the only thing I immediately notices is the logo on the trucks, the word Penny written in script on the bottom and the P on the tail. All aesthetic things. I don't own a 2012 yet, but I just was in the top 15 in the Penny Time iPhone App contest so I should be receiving one sometime soon and I will do a full comparison between it and my old one.
Deleteordered a stereo, while waiting or it to arrive, i spotted the penny (and nickel) in a store. bought the penny in green/orange/yellow and rode it down 7th ave with about 3 pushes in 6 blocks (passing bikers and pedi-cabs). This thing flies and i am a fat old man (6'205lbs). When i got home from work, the stereo was at my house, both boards look identical but the penny is much better. My stereo has purple translucent wheels that are so soft it feels like i have flat tires. I am going to inspect the bearings now to see if they are shot.
ReplyDeleteThats awesome. Glad it sounds like you're going to get a bunch of fun out of them.
DeleteCouldn't agree more on the Stereo's wheels. I have the same ones and they are exactly like you describe. I replaced the bearings and it didn't help too much. I wasn't happy with the Stereo until I replaced the wheels.
Hey, I have a stereo and my front truck is broken due to it getting run over by a car and want to replace them. Any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteMidtracks work best in my opinion, Ace00 are a little wider but work also. The holes are a tiny bit off on those stock trucks so it might be some work to get standard trucks to fit. I have used a drill to open the holes on the Stereo a little, but others have said they were able to force the screws through.
ReplyDeleteWhat is better.... Stock penny or stereo with bones red bearings?
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, the stock Penny. Better wheels hands down and trucks are a little better.
DeleteI have s tight budget, thus I am choosing between Fish and Penny skateboards.
ReplyDeleteCould you offer me some advice on both brands? I am just a novice in skateboarding.
Thanks in advance!!
I don't have a fish complete, just a couple decks. I like the deck just fine but can't compare the trucks and wheels to a Penny. As far as comparing the Penny to the other complete skateboards I have, it is my favorite. Until I get to ride a Fish complete I can't say I recommend or don't recommend it. I do however recommend the Penny.
DeleteThanks for your advice. I got a Penny today. I have troubles stopping the skateboard, and I almost got crashed by a car ><. Can you teach me? And do you recommend going uphill with it?
DeleteCongratulations, you should have lots of fun on it. As far as cars and stoping, I would stay away from cars until you are much more comfortable. Maybe a closed parking lot or something. Next, you will end up jumping off at first no matter what. Practice controlling your speed by carving back and forth when you need to slow down a little.
DeleteAfter you get more comfortable you will start to footbrake. That is almost like having one foot on the board and dragging sole of the other foot on the ground, That will take a while to get just the right amount of pressure on the ground though. Lots of practice and start out very slow.
Eventually, you will learn to slide. Not always practical, but the most fun way to slow down.
You'll find that this will all become second nature, it just takes some time on your board. Have fun.
So i bought a stereo and i an a little disappointed with the ride. What would you recommend putting on it to make it ride smoother. I weigh 175lbs what brushings? and i think im going to get the bones reds. How are the wheels and the trucks?
ReplyDeleteYeah, I hear that a lot about the Stereo. I feel the same way. Awesome deck, but lacking in the rest.
ReplyDeleteOn mine I have Tracker Midtracks Bones Swiss and Bennett Alligators. The Swiss are overkill, I buy Reds now instead. For bushings, I am about your weight and I like to start with Khiro Reds and ride it for a while then decide if i want to change them harder or softer.
What is more important? New bushings or new bearings? On a penny board.
ReplyDeleteThough question, the bearings are decent, so unless the stock bushings feel really good to you I would swap them out first.
DeleteWhat kind of bearings would be best on a penny? I'm 105 pounds
DeleteAnd bushings?
DeleteI have been using Bones Reds lately. They roll nicely and are pretty inexpensive if you look around a little.
DeleteFor your weight you want soft bushings. I would try Khiro orange or Bones soft and see how they feel.
What board is better with new bushings and bearings? Thank you
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your reviews I want to get the Penny. I would probably ride stock. But everybody else already has one and I want to stand out from the crowd. So if there is another PLASTIC cruiser that is good stock can you please tell me. All I can find is a Globe and it really looks horrible. So I will probably get a Stereo despite the defects unless you can please help me find a good stock plastic cruiser.
ReplyDeleteThe Penny is popular, but don't hold that against it, its a fun board. The Bantam is a good setup too stock, but if its not your thing thats cool.
ReplyDeleteSomething to look at maybe is http://bananaboards.com/comingsoon/
I don't see them for sale anywhere yet, but I'm excited about it.
Another thing to look at if you want to stand out that is available now are green banana skateboards. The Eco Cruiser and Lil Nanner are odd shapes but awesome rides. They get a lot of comments whenever I take them out and they are well priced.
Also, Fish Skateboards, Similar to Penny and Stereo but not as common.
I hope these get you looking around and thinking. I have ridden all except for the Banana Board. If you have any specific questions, let me know.
I forgot Flexdex. A little more pricey, but they are what first got me interested in non-wood decks. Still some of my favorite decks.
DeleteThanks for the suggestions and quick response. For whatever reason my mind is dead set on getting the stereo. So I will get that and switch out the bearings with my Abec 5's on my skateboard. Probably won't ride it again cause I'll always be on my stereo. The reason I'm not getting Bone Reds is my Abec 5's spin is 3/4 as long as my friends Reds. And I'm on a REALLY tight budget.
ReplyDeleteHave fun with it, let me know what you think after you get some time in riding it.
ReplyDeleteK. I will. BTW this is the best review/blog on the INTERNET!
ReplyDeleteAwwww, thanks.
DeleteI am the same person who just talked about getting the stereo. Are all 78a wheels as squishy as the stock Stereo ones. Or are the stock Stereo wheels just bad 78a wheels? Thanks cause I found some Bigfoot 62mm 78a wheels that look awesome but I don't want t get wheels that are too soft and make me push more than i would comfortably for cruising around town. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteNot all 78a wheels feel the same. The Stereo feel much softer, too soft to me, than the other 78a wheels I have tried. I have never ridden the Bigfoot brand of wheel so I cant give you an opinion on how they will feel. Wheels I have tried in that size range that feel better than the Stereos are Penny, ABEC 11, Bennett, OJs, even Sector 9. There are probably some others, that is just what I can think of off the top of my head. I am using Penny wheels on most of the boards I regularly ride now. They are a good mix of ride vs. cost.
Delete*70mm 78a
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, these are too big. Try them out if you want, they may be perfect for you but I like 60ish mm on these boards.
DeleteSo. Are all 78a wheels as squishy as the stock Stereo Vinyl Cruiser wheels. Or are they just bad wheels?
ReplyDeleteNo, some feel much better than others. The Stereo's are among the worst I have ridden.
DeleteDoes the stereo get scratches easier or the penny ?
ReplyDeleteAny skateboard will get some scratches if you ride it. I don't think either is more resistant to scratches than the other. Its okay though, they look good with a little wear, shows you get out on it.
Deletedo you think the penny wheels will be able to fit the stereo?
DeleteYes, the bearings in both are the same, you can swap the wheels between the two.
Deletewhich is better among brighton, penny and a stereo ?
ReplyDeleteI don't have a brighton so I can t answer that part. I like the Penny better than the Stereo though.
DeleteI was looking into getting 65mm 80a Sector 9 butterball wheels, but i was wondering if they would be too big for my penny. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteThey are a little bigger than I like, but they will be okay.
DeleteGreat post man I love it, most helpful post I have found on the internet, not just for Penny and Stereo but basic information on skating equipment, you are very knowledgeable. The toughest decision after this post I had to make was the color lol. I decided on the Stereo considering i am going to upgrade it. I decided with the bones redz and am going to try the board for a bit stock to see the difference. Very excited for this board, thanks for all the help!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Glad to help anyone who wants or likes to skate anytime I can.
DeleteBut you didn't say what color you ended up with?
I have a penny board and my wheels are cracked up! I don't know if i should get another pair of penny wheels or hard wheels? is there a difference in the ride between the two?
ReplyDeleteDepends how hard. If you mean hard like street wheels, 98a+ then that is a hugely different ride. I don't like street wheels even if I'm in the park.
DeleteIf you mean just a little harder like 81a or 83a then not a major difference, still a pretty smooth ride.
What wheels are you thinking of?
I wanted to get a new pair of wheels that would slide better than the penny wheels. which wheels would you recommend?
ReplyDeleteLook at something a little harder, like 81a or 83a for just a little better slide and still a smooth ride, look harder like 85-90a if you want to slide even easier, but give up some smoothness.
DeleteIs Punked City crusier good?
ReplyDeleteI have not played with one yet, It looks like the Penny/Fish decks so I would guess the deck is probably similar to them. The rest is questionable. For that price I would guess the trucks, wheels and bearings are pretty low end. I cant say for sure until I play with one though.
DeleteMy stereo wheels aint balanced. Any idea how to balance it?
ReplyDeleteThat feeling could be a couple things.
Delete1. the bearings are not seated properly, take off that wheel and make sure the bearings are pushed in nice and even then put it back on.
2. bent axle, when you have the wheels off look real close and make sure the axle is straight.
3. flatspot on the wheel, this will happen more with harder wheels, but if you have been sliding a lot, you might have gotten a flat spot.
Probably just a bearing, but if not let me know and we will try to figure it out.
The axle is a little bent. So what do i do with it?
DeleteThat sucks, but it happens sometimes. You can try to straighten it with a hammer or a thin pipe, but it will be weaker and bend easier next time. You could just live with it until it gets too bad to ride. The best idea is probably to get some better quality trucks and run them with speed rings, spacers and the axle nuts tight so it is less likely to happen again.
DeleteHi. I am new to the cruising. I have been looking into both the Penny and Stereo. The Penny is looking better because it is better stock quality as opposed to the Stereo where some things need to be changed out. I like the Stereo Vinyl because it is made by real skaters but at the same time i dont have the time and funds to invest in changing some things out. I also dislike the Penny because they are used everywhere and are not made by real skaters. Again, I am a beginner and I just want to cruise around campus. Any help would be awesome. Thank You :)
ReplyDeleteI moved your comment to
ReplyDeletehttp://libertyfl.blogspot.com/2012/08/penny-vs-stereo-vinyl-cruiser-comments.html
I have had to delete a bunch of posts from this page because it acts funny when there are over 200. I am trying not to delete anymore.
is a penny board good to ride actual swimming pools?
ReplyDeleteIm thinking of getting a penny board but I dont know if I should is there a weight limit?
ReplyDeleteSo, after reading through your recommendations, I ordered a Stereo cruiser, Bones Hardcore bushings (81a), and Bones Reds bearings. The difference between it pre-upgrades and post-upgrades was ridiculous! Like, "man, I kinda regret not getting a Penny" to "Holy shit, I'm in love" level of difference! Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteI am a little worried that one of my axles might be tweaked though. It's not noticeable on the street, but I'll ride it in the tattoo shop I work to kill time between appointments and, thanks to the buttery smooth concrete, I can feel a slight hop. Either one of my wheels is slightly off round or I have a tweaked axle. It's not enough to bother me at this point, but I do see myself upgrading bother eventually (bought the Stereo because I liked the deck style more than the Penny), so what would you recommend as far trucks and wheels?
Thats awesome. Im glad you got the bones on that Stereo kingpin, some of us on here have had a little trouble with bushings with the hard insert fitting.
DeleteOne other guy reported the Stereo axle bending, so it doesnt seem really common, but it does happen. With any truck really if you ride it hard and long enough.
I have my Stereo set up with Midtracks and 62mm Bennett Alligators. I have tried a bunch of setups on Pennys and Stereos and this is one of the best in my opinion.
hi,i'm from israel and here whe shop sell only stereo vinyl cruiser.now,is good no? i just upgrade the bearings and is will be good.you thing penny better? why? comments penny and stereo.
ReplyDeletethank you
Hi i wanted to purchase a crusier but i have no idea which to get a penny or a stereo i am a medium size girl and i want a smooth one that can also go fast i need your help please
ReplyDeletep.s i have never gotten a skateboard or crusier
