I really like riding and talking about plastic or fiberglass skateboards.

Penny Nickel Skateboard Arrived Today
Holy cow this thing seems huge after getting used to the other Penny and Stereo sized boards. I will post some more pics and reaction After I get some riding in this weekend.
I did read about them a while ago, but I guess I missed them being released. After I get this Penny's setup dialed in the Globe will likely be the next one I get.
Both are a lot of fun. Nickel probably takes less getting use to because it is closer in size to a new school deck. The Penny is super turny and fun because of the tight wheelbase. My advice would be if you want comfort or are a big guy/lady get the Nickel. If you want to try something different and turn like crazy, do the Penny.
Thanks for answering! I'm a little lady, 5'2, so I guess I'll go for the Penny. So excited! I have just about given up on trick skating (too afraid of falling). I just want to cruise now. =)
I like them both now that I have the setups dialed in. More of how I feel that day instead of one being better than the other. Don't feel bad, the Nickel is really fun board people love it too, I know because I am one.
Bushings will change a trucks feel greatly. Flat washers vs. cupped washers will change it a little bit more. How much do you weigh? That will give a good starting point for what bushings will feel good without giving too much wheelbite or get destroyed too fast. The Nickel will never turn as tight as a Penny, because the wheelbases are so different. Just like the Penny will never be as stable as the Nickel at faster speeds, because of the wheelbases. It will however turn like crazy once you get it dialed in and get used to it.
And holy cow, I have never seen a emoticon smiley with eyes to the right instead of to the left. I feel like a whole new world has been opened to me.
I'm like 102/104lbs? So that's the advantage huh, the speed. I already got bruises from falling on how fast the nickel is. How am I able to spin and slide on the nickel? Or any other tricks? Same concepts thats from a pennyboard?
And the smiley, yea I never felt so proud in my life typing in "(:" to the right. I'll even type [: if its amusing!
Yes, the Nickel will be more stable faster. You should try some soft bushings since you want to carve more. For your weight I would try some Khiro whites or maybe whites in front and oranges in back and see how it feels. Maybe some Venoms between 70-80a. Next on my list of bushings to try are Riptides. You could give them a try also. Remember though that the softer bushings will take away some of the stability until you get used to them. For tricks, since it has a nice tail you should be able to learn to ollie, and then there are a ton of tricks based on that. I learned to 180 ollie before I could ever ollie straight so go with what works for you and your style. Just work on what feels right and once you build up some confidence and balance the rest will come. Also practice manuals. They are fun and look pretty cool when you can ride them forever. And the balance you get will help you in everything else. Sliding will be tougher to learn on the soft wheels that come with the Penny or Nickel but definitely can be done. And you will be that much better at it if you ever decide to get on some wheels a little harder. For either style of trick watch a bunch of Youtube videos and then go out and spend some time practicing. Don't be afraid to fall and have a lot of patience. You will be able to get it all down, it will just take time.
For the venom, super carve seems nice. so 78a is good? Or 90a? Because I thought it'd had to be the same as the original bushings on my board. anyways, thanks a ton!
Ah nvm, I'm gona buy the khiro whites , front & khiro black , back. Thanks, I've asked a lot (:. I'll go to you if I have any future questions! - pennyboard1@hotmail.com
You don't have to get the same durometer bushings as the trucks had originally. You could and just get some of a better urethane than the originals, but the idea is to get harder or softer ones depending on your weight and style. As long as this is the same Anonymous that wrote they were 102-104lbs above, the whites in front sound good for you, but for your weight I think the blacks will be way to hard. I weigh about 170 and I use the blacks and yellows on my old school freestyle board because I do not want it to turn or lean much. If you want the backs a little harder I would think you would like oranges and maybe even blues way better than the blacks for cruising and carving around. Not trying to tell you what to do but I think the blacks would not be such a good fit.
Yea, this is the anonymous that has been asking questions. I'm thinking of buying the small cone bushings from Khiro.I ment typing in orange not black for the back truck. Man, Manuels are hard. I already fell constantly P: Well, On just being clumsy hah
You had me worried with the blacks, the oranges are a much better idea. Barrels and cones will work. There is enough kingpin that pretty much any Khiros I have tried will fit easily. They will be hard at first, keep trying, you will get them down.
Looks good, have you seen those Globe Bantam boards?

ReplyDeleteSo should i try the penny or nickel for my first plastic cruiser?

ReplyDeleteWhich one do you prefer?
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of starting to feel bad since i bought the nickel and people seem to LOVE the penny.

ReplyDeleteOkay, thanks (: is there any possible way i can make the trucks do more carves like an original pennyboard?

Ah sorry 'bout that. where should I buy them?
ReplyDeleteI have used a bunch of different on-line shops. I do not really endorse or suggest any one over the other.
ReplyDeleteAh okay. For now I bought the hardcore bushings .
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Those are good, I am running them in my indeesz 139s. Let me know how you like them.
