Globe Traction Pads

I used to build a lot of wood boards in my garage for fun.  I started with flat plywood, then started to layer the wood for concave and tails, then started to use fiberglass and then started to make foam cores with wood and fiberglass to strengthen it.  It was fun but I have not made one in a while.  I have lately been more interested in plastic skateboards so I have been buying different types of plastics and melting and bending and researching them and its even more fun.  I have made a couple that are functional and have broken a whole bunch more.  I will post pics of board and some of that experience at some point when I am better at it.
I bring all this up because on the favorite board I ever made, this foam core mini.

I used clear grip tape on the front and used part of a surfboard traction pad as the back half of the grip.  It was and still is awesome.  Looks really cool and provides plenty of grip for a cruiser.
Surfboard traction pads are too expensive, at least $30 and only cover half the deck, to use on every board when a full sheet of grip tape is $5 or less.  I was excited sometime ago to see Globe made their Cruiserboard Tailpad.  The price was still $20 but a little better.  I held off even though I considered buying one or two a couple times.  The other day I was ordering a few things and in the sale section of a big online shop were the Globe tail pads for $6 a piece.  I got a few and they just came today.  They feel just like the surfboard traction pad on my foamcore.  They are going to work well on flat decks.  I am going to try them on the Penny or Stereo and it they stick well enough and seem like they are going to hold up for a while I thing I need to order a few more for that price.

Holes

To fit standard old school drilled trucks like Tracker Midtracks on a Stereo Vinyl Cruiser, Fish Skateboard or a Penny, there is a little drilling that needs to be done.  Some people say they have been able to just force the bolts through, but I have not experienced this, I have drilled all mine.  

A comment on another post asked for some pics of the holes drilled.  Here they are.

The Left is the stock hole.  Right is the drilled hole.  As you can see, we are not drilling a whole new hole, just opening up one side of the existing hole because the standard mounting hole pattern is just a little bit longer than the Penny / Vinyl / Fish mounting pattern.

This opens up our choice of trucks to anything really narrow and drilled for old school mounting.

I regripped my Penny again just because I wanted to do something cool to post with the #pennygrip hashtag on instagram.  By the way, I am holdsfast on there If anyone wants to follow me or @holdsfast me to show me some cool pics.
So I made some stencils, and a little spray paint later, here it is.  I like it.

Independent Downhill Baseplates, Old School mounting!

This is really really really cool.  I saw a while ago that Independent was making these downhill baseplates.  They have a 2 1/4" kingpin instead of the normal 2" Thats kind of nice but the big thing is they are drilled for new and old school mounting.  With the old school mounting I can do things like run Ace00 hangers on Indy baseplates on a Penny or Stereo and run Indys on Flexdex boards without having to re drill anything.  

I also got some risers, and some bushings.  I have not really cared for Bones Hard in the past, but as I am starting to like harder bushings again I thought I would give them another try.  I got two sets because I want to try the tall ones top and bottom in the Surf Rodz Indeesz on my Penny.

I have 2 decks on the way that I am really curious about and some bushings I have never tried before on the way but these holidays are messing with my waiting times for shipping.  I wish every thing in the world was Amazon Prime eligible, I would already have this stuff.  In the mean time here are some size comparison pics.

Powell Peralta Rat Bones

How awesome are these.  These were the wheels on the first skateboard I ever had.  I was like 10 or something so they did not get ridden very hard and are still in crazy good shape.  They went in towards the bearings so the graphics did not get worn off instantly like most of todays wheels.  And different graphics on each side.  I would pick up a set of the reissues of these of they made them a little softer.  I would love to have a couple sets of these in about 80a.

Green Banana Skateboards

Just got this board, it is made by green banana skateboards.  

1/2 inch thick with a little nose and tail, no concave. Made of some kind of plastic and 

came with clear grip.  

I set it up with Indy Stage 10's and Cadillac wheels.  The trucks have Khiro insert bushings, red

in back and blue in front.  The wheels are 56mm and 78a.

Skateboard Hardware Sizes

Skateboard hardware, or the bolts that hold the truck to the deck, are size
10-32.
Lengths needed are
No risers-1″ or 7/8″
1/8″ riser-1″ or 1 1/4″
1/4″ riser-1 1/4″
1/2″ riser-1 1/2″
Wedged risers- combination of lengths

Bolts can be flathead, Phillips head or Allen head. The nuts need a 3/8 inch socket or wrench.

The shape of the heads are usually flat for a wood deck. The also can be pan or truss head for a fiberglass, wood or other material decks.

Skateboard Axle Nut Size

The nut that goes on the axle, that holds the wheel on to the truck is 5/16ths and 24 tpi or threads per inch. To tighten these bolts you need a wrench or socket that is 1/2″

Skateboard Kingpin Size

I need a new kingpin for one of my trucks. Kingpins are 3/8″ diameter and 24 threads per inch. To tighten or loosen these you need a 9/16″ wrench.

These are Venom Bushings, the barrels are called downhill, the cones are called super carve, one of each is called standard.

Barrels measure approximately 5/8″ tall, and about 1′ wide.

The cones measure approximately the same 5/8″ tall and taper from about 1″ to about 11/16″

There are 2 types of urethane and color schemes for determining hardness, standard and SHR or super high rebound.

SHR durometers are:

The tops and bottoms are around 1″ wide at the widest point. They are both about 3/4″ wide at the aluminum insert. The top is approximately 7/16″ tall and the bottom is about 9/16″ tall.

Both bushings taper from 1″ at the widest to about 3/4″ at their narrowest. The bottom is 9/16″ tall and the top is about 3/8″ tall.

I can’t find the durometer for these on the Internet but I guess they feel kind of Khiro blue-ish. So maybe mid-80s?
