I did this a few days ago. Because of the square lip on the raised "grip"part of both of the boards it is pretty easy to trim and looks pretty good. This is easy and cheap and makes these boards ride 1000 times better. At first I was just putting an inch strip down the center of the board, that works okay if you still want to see the design in the top of the deck. This feels much better though, I think they stay like this now.

So you just gripped over the waffled plastic and it stays on okay?
ReplyDeleteBecause there is not as much surface area it does not stick as well as a flat board but in my experience it sticks well enough. If you ride it really hard it will wrinkle a little bit at the edge but it will smooth back out. It might not look as cool as the grip patterns but I feel like it makes the board much more rideable.
ReplyDeleteCool stuff! I'll probably be riding most of the year in the rain, so grip would be extremely helpful. Thanks for the info!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I ride back from the beach with wet shoes a lot. The grip tape makes a huge difference. You are welcome, any time.
ReplyDeletecan you give me some advice on how you cut around the circle/logo?
ReplyDeleteYeah, get the griptape on and then step on the deck a bunch until you can see the outline of the circle clearly. Then take a piece of metal, I used the corner of a file and slowly start scratching at the edge of the lip around the circle through the grip tape. After a couple passes it will be lighter and pretty defined, just go slow at first. Then its up to you, just keep doing it until that line wears through or use a razor blade to speed up the process.
ReplyDeleteHi I was just wondering will we need spacers for the stereo vinyl and if not would you recommend putting some on anyways if this board is just mainly going to be used for cruising.
ReplyDeleteI use bearing spacers and speed rings in everything. You can get by without them but because the cores in any wheel are not perfect, and most truck hangers are not faced, there will be weird loads on the bearings that they are not designed for. Spacers will help this.
ReplyDeleteI cant remember for sure but I think it came with spacers stock. If so just reuse those if you replace the bearings. If not they are only $3-4 for a set, will give you a little better ride and will pretty much last forever..
hey I wanted to experiment with my penny and put grip tape on (test it out). if i do decide to take the tape off, will it leave a sticky residue, or have any other effect on the board? do you thing the tape would be easy to remove as well? need your help man, thanks
ReplyDeletehey man could you maybe put up a vid of your board and possibly explain the technique you used. would be so incredibly awesome and useful, cheers bud
ReplyDeleteYeah, most of the time I have removed griptape is has left some residue behind. I never worried about it because I was always putting new grip back over it. Goo gone or something like that would probably take it off but I have never tried it.
ReplyDeleteIf grip tape is hard to get off ever, just leave it in the sun for a while. It will pull off really easy once its a little warm.
All mine are currently gripped, but next time I re-grip one Ill shoot a video of the process and post. Good idea.
Do u have the video?
DeleteI havent gripped my newest Penny yet, Im giving the no grip tape thing a chance, but I will video it when I do.
Deleteno prob man your one awsome speed demon
ReplyDeletebtw - what colour are the trucks on the penny?
ReplyDeleteMine are silver. They make others though.
ReplyDeleteHey mate, the Penny looks so sick. I have a black an red board too but I was wondering where you got your red bolts from?
ReplyDeleteI pushed some black bolts through some cardboard so only the heads were showing then spray painted them red. Im sure you can get red bolts somewhere, but I have a bunch of black so I made some.
ReplyDeleteIs cutting around the griptape on the penny and stereo as easy as cutting around a regular board?
DeletePretty close, there is a nice square lip, if you rub a file or rock or something around it a few times a razor blade will go right through.
DeleteAlright thanks!
DeleteThe guy at Zumiez said it wouldn't stay on as well because it would create air pockets due to the waffle designs. Is it good on yours ??? Does it stay on good. How has it been so far ??? It looks really good.
ReplyDeleteI have not experienced this to be an issue. I have gripped a Penny, Nickel, Fish and Stereo and the grip has held up pretty well on all of them.
ReplyDeleteI am using regular old Jessup on all but the nickel, that has Mob.
Thanks. If you go for it let me know how your experience goes.
I want new wheels for my Stereo but don't know what i should get? I have the purple wheels but they are to soft and pick up to much glass and etc in the wheels. I was thinking Gumballs but wanted your opinion. And keep it up i took your advice and got new bearings and bushings on my Stereo and they work great. (I also got light blue Gumball Screws made for pennys on my board and they make my board look way cooler and was worth the five bucks)
ReplyDeleteI agree about the purple Stereo Wheels. Gumballs are huge, its your board if you want to try them then by all means do so, but that is much bigger than I would put on the Stereo. Is there a reason you were thinking about going so big?
ReplyDeleteGlad all your new parts are working out, you are making that into quite a nice ride.
Hey its me again... you were right, i finally tried this and it worked, and it looks amazing too. Thank you for all the tips n stuff. I just love how it looks on my stereo cruiser.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear it, have fun.
DeleteDo u have a video for a stereo? And if not can u make one please.?
DeleteI cant promise when, but yeah, i need to start shooting more video when we go on rides. Ill work on it.
DeleteHave you posted the video yet?
