Baseplate testing

Im in the process of trying these baseplates with ace 00 hangers to see if I can tell a difference.  I rode the stock baseplates for enough time to get a feel for them.  I switched to the Indy stage 9 baseplates and am giving them a while before I switch to the cores.  I dont expect a huge difference but just looking at them the geometry is a little different and Indys trucks definitely feel different than Ace trucks so maybe just changing the baseplates will make enough of a difference to make aces my goto narrow trucks.  I doubt it though...

  1. This is interesting to me. I think I told you about drilling out holes for a cal-240 (broken baseplate). I'm now considering putting the stock "Universal" truck hangers on another baseplate!
    Excited to try it.

  2. Let me know how it works out. I like experiments.

  3. Took some no name baseplates and put the hangers on. Not a perfect fit as the kingpin seems to be at a slightly different angle. I'll post some pix somewhere. It rides pretty nice, prettymuch as I remember it stock. Much improved though. It's still so narrow that it wants to tip over on hard carves. In a transitional moment I had the bionic universal on the front and an Indy 169 on the back. There was something brilliant and absurd about that. Turny and stable. Looked like a rocket.

  4. Thats cool that they feel good.
That had to be something. At least it wasnt a 215.

  6. Man those are awesome. Do those wheels rub at all on the bushing seat when you turn?

  7. I thought they wer rubbing at first, but I've been riding it a lot lately and haven't had any problems. Not even marks on the wheel really (a few faint lines). I am watching for it though. The axle is slightly short it seems. The OJs just barely fit. Probably need something even more sideset?

The trucks work way better than they should. I just put the hangers on the first thing i could find. Now that i have some Bennett vectors i might see if they'd work well with the Universal hangers. They are such a bennett style i bet they match up. Hard to justify disabling the bennetts for that though. I don't thing i'll have much luck finding Bennnett baseplates as that's probably one thing the world will never have enough of. ACS was the replacement base of choice for Bennetts, but i've never even seen one of those. Saw some machined baseplates as well. Pricey. Fun to play with this stuff though.

Have you seen the Gunmetal pistol 90mm? 6" axle, but looks like a Bennett. They are attractive.

  8. More sideset probably wont make the difference. What will make the difference is how wide the core is. Most wheels are 10mm cores meaning there is 10mm between the bearings. If you find some wheels that work with 8mm spacers that will give you a little extra room. They are few and far between I know Kryptonics were but I dont know if even they are anymore.
Thats pretty cool that it worked out. Im all for using the Bennetts because you can always put them back together, but if what your running works together I might just leave it that way too.
I know Gunmetal had quality issues early on but those look so cool I might have to try them out at some point.

  9. I get what you're saying about the core. I'm hoping that fresh nuts will have enough hold to keep the wheels on.

I have another cal240 where the kingpin screws into the plastic of the board...trucks intact. However, vitually every wheel rubs on the inside. Put some little street wheels on it for clearance and found that the trucks feel alright, but the kingpin works its way out of the board pretty quick. Not a safe feeling. Better hang that one on the wall for now.

  10. On short kingpins I have turned the nut around so the nutlock is in the inside. Not the best Idea but you could try it.

  11. I did that very thing! Working well so far. Too much fun. I'm riding it so much that the Stereo Cruiser is feeling big and sluggish!?! Crazy.

  12. Haha, maybe the Stereo can be your downhill speed board now.
