Penny Nickel Gripped

I gripped and took this new Penny Nickel on a first ride for a couple laps around the neighborhood today.
 Pics pre-grip

So long top logo.
Now my skateboard's top is less slidey.

After riding for a while I can say this is the funnest skateboard ever.  Now I say that about every skateboard I ride,  except for ones with stupid hard wheels,  but that does not make it less true.  I like the original because it is so short it turns like crazy.  In comparison this one still turns, maybe not so much but feels comfortable riding much faster.  Also there is no getting used to the length for me.  After riding a longer board one day and then riding a 22" the next you have to pay attention to your feet because there is not much space for them.  This is long enough that there was no thought to my foot placment while kicking around.

I expected to change out the trucks soon, maybe to some 4.3 Bennetts or some Indy 129s.  I might even try my new Indeesz 139s but I think they might be too wide unless I use some narrow wheels.  I was surprised though that these trucks feel pretty good so far.  I will probably change the bearings and play with different bushings, but I think I will keep these trucks and wheels on for a while.

Or I will get bored and put the Indy's on anyway because I like how they look and I need an excuse to drill the baseplates for old school mounting holes anyway.  I want to see if this Nickel deck and these Penny trucks are a true old school mounting pattern or of they are a little short like the 22".

On a side note, I am not sure if I got a bad piece or what but that Mob Pabst Blue Ribbon grip tape  sucked.  When I need grip tape I usually go to the Vans store and buy Jessup from the cute girl.  This is the first time I have ordered grip tape in a while.  Maybe the printing messes it up but it was really brittle and had a couple wrinkles that were hard to get out while applying it to the deck.  On the upside this Nickel was easy to trim up neat as was the 22" because of the squared lip at the edge of their molded traction.

  1. So should I be glad that i bought the nickel rather then the penny?

  2. Yeah, be happy you got the Nickel. I really like the Penny but that does not take anything away from the Nickel. The Nickel is a really fun board. Also, I am not a fan of the trucks on the Penny, but I still am riding the stock trucks on the Nickel and I really like them. So if you put the Penny stock vs the Nickel stock, I think I would take the Nickel.
If I can change out the parts, they are more equal and then would probably depend on my mood which one I take out for a ride.

  3. Did you ever figure out if the nickel had true old school mounting?

  4. Yes, the mounting holes are standard old school. I was happy to see that even though I am still riding those stock 4" Penny trucks. I like them a ton better than the smaller Penny trucks. Good to have options to switch to though without having to take a drill to the deck.

  5. I just wanted to ask, how light is the penny nickel compared to wooden boards the same size? Also how are the trucks on them? They seem narrower than what I'm used to based on specs, and I'm worried about ordering online. Thank you.

  6. I dont have the exact weights, but there is no noticeable difference between the nickel and my wood freestyle board that is about the same length. The Penny/Nickel material is not heavy like Flexdex material.
I like the trucks on the Nickel. I usually try out a few trucks on a deck to see what I like best and the Penny trucks feel good enough that I have not even tried swapping them out yet. But if you do, as I said above, the board is drilled for standard old school mounting so a swap is easier than on the smaller Penny.
The trucks have about a 4" hanger. for comparison Indy 129s have about a 5" hanger. They are narrower but the lip on the wheels stick out a little past the trucks so the difference in width from the ends of the wheels is only about 1/2" If you are a longboarder and used to riding 180s or something then its going to be a much greater difference.
It depends on what you are used to and what you want out of it. If you have anymore questions before you decide, ask away, Im happy to help make sure you get a board that fits. It is a really fun cruiser, I like mine.

  9. Hi, I'm getting a board for the time. Would you recommend me the Penny or the Penny/Nickel? And can I know what's their advantages and disadvantages? Thanks.

  10. I like and ride them both. The Penny is good if you are not huge and want a really quick, turny, little board. The Nickel is good if you want a bigger. more comfortable, more stable board.
If you give me some more info I can get more specific. How big are you? What type of riding do you want to do? Any really big hills?

  11. Hey i was just wondering what would fit me? im 5'8 195lbs and shoe size 10 and i really like the penny because its small but im new to skateboarding (im also a mongo pusher), i would just want a board that i can ride and cruise around campus and roads and stuff(also small enough to carry around), soooo which would you prefer a penny or nickel? (though i was really looking forward to getting a penny), also how would the turning be if i would add the nickel trucks to the penny trucks? (i couldn't decide because you said the nickel is much more stable, being a noob and stuff i may need that stability lols

  12. My opinion is to get the Penny, it sounds like you'll be happier with it. The Nickel is more stable because of the longer wheelbase mostly, very little to do with the trucks so swapping them to the Penny wouldn't do much. If you want it to be more stable you can just put harder bushings in until you get the hang of it.

  13. Awesome thanks but i don't really mind to have a nickel board also lols. As long as the board is compact and smaller than the average skateboard then ill be happy. Bout the trucks, what will happen if the trucks stick out more than the width of the board? sry to ask repeated question but since i might get a penny i couldn't decide performance-wise which is better the stereo or penny. i read that you said penny is better stocked but since the stereo is cheaper will performance as in riding smoothness and turning ability will be similar? and could the trucks in both be changed for something better if they wear out? (hearing bout how kingpins and holes and what not is different form the standard)

im still undecided between nickel or penny or stereo lols but im so excited to ride any of those.

  14. The Nickel is going to be pretty close to the size of a new school board. Trucks and wheels can stick out a little. Too far on a narrow board and you might get footbite or have them in the way when you push. The Penny and the Stereo will be close enough performance wise after a bearing swap. The trucks can be changed, but the holes are a little off so you would have to take a drill to 2 of the 4 for each truck.

  15. Don't buy a stereo board mate I had a go on my friends after I had started riding my penny and there's no competition the penny soooooooo much better. The problems with the stereo are the bushings ant the deck. The bushings arn't as nice and soft as the penny's so it doesnt turn as well. The deck is made out of a completely different plastic the the penny's and the plastic feels very brittle under foot when you ride it whereas the flex in a penny gives a much smoother ride. It might also have to be safe against cars and the penny is much better at that although I wouldn't suggest testing it or anything. Mine got run over by 2 lorries a van and a car and it survived :)

    1. I also like the Penny's parts better than the Stereo's. I don't have the same problem with the Stereo deck though. I don't mind that it feels a little stiffer, I like how both the Stereo and Penny decks feel.
If your board got run over 4 times, I feel like you are either telling stories or have some really bad luck. Maybe you should skate in a safer area or stop pulling our leg.

  16. Do you recomend to change the wheels or the trucks on the nickel board, or do you think its not necceseary? I want to turn the nickel board into the best possible cruiser board, and do not really know what others trucks and wheels will do. Please help me :)
